COMMENTS:

From Susan Sontag's article "Fascinating Fascism" (1974):

The Second Panel of Riefenstahl's "Triptych of Fascist Visuals:" "In OLYMPIA, the richest visually of all her films (it uses both the verticals of [her earlier] mountain films and the horizontal movements characteristic of TRIUMPH OF THE WILL), one straining, scantily clad figure after another seeks the ecstasy of victory, cheered on by ranks of compatriots in the stands, all under the still gaze of the benign Super-Spectator, Hitler, whose presence in the stadium concentrates this effort. (OLYMPIA, which could as well have been called TRIUMPH OF THE WILL, emphasizes that there are no easy victories.)"
